The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
